The now 39-year-old Federer, top seed for his own people, only played his third tournament in eighteen months. In 2020 he only came into action at the Australian Open, after which he had to undergo two operations on his knee.
Two months ago, the tennis icon took part in the Doha ATP tournament “as a test”. The intention is now to play several tournaments in a row with Geneva, Roland Garros, Halle and Wimbledon.
In Geneva it immediately went wrong against Spaniard Andujar in the second round. It became 4-6, 6-4 and 4-6. Federer, clearly not yet at top level, seemed to make it home in the third set, but gave up a 2-4 lead.
