Rocket Lab USA Selected by NASA for Prefire Mission to Study Earth’s Energy Balance

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — NASA has selected Rocket Lab USA, a California satellite producer and launch service provider, to provide launch service for the Prefire (Polar Radiant Energy Satellite in Far Infrared Experiment) mission.

NASA said in a statement on Monday that the mission aims to give researchers a more accurate picture of the energy going in and out of Earth.

The Prefire mission will help bridge the gap in understanding how much Earth’s heat is lost to space, especially from the Arctic and Antarctica.

Prefire’s analysis is expected to inform climate and ice models, providing better projections of how global warming will affect sea ice loss, ice sheet melt, and sea level rise, according to NASA.
