RMI warns against slippery roads, gritters are leaving

During the night from Sunday to Monday, local rhyme spots can arise in almost the entire country. The RMI therefore issues code yellow for smoothness.

The code yellow applies in almost all of Flanders (all provinces except West Flanders), roughly speaking, from Sunday at 10 pm to Monday at 10 am. Local rhyming spots may also arise in Brussels and Wallonia, it says.

The meteorological institute expects freezing temperatures in most places during the night from Sunday to Monday. The minima would be around or just below freezing in the west, but drop to -4 degrees in the center and to -5 to even -10 degrees in the Ardennes.

Brussels gritters are leaving

Because of the predicted freezing cold, the Brussels gritting trucks will drive out on Sunday for the first time this winter. They will scatter preventively on the regional roads and cycle paths of the Brussels region, Brussels Mobility announces on Sunday.

The gritters will first take care of the cycle paths around 6 pm, says Inge Paemen, the spokeswoman for Brussels Mobility. From 10 pm, they will spread preventively on all regional roads in the Brussels region.

The road network to be covered is just over 800 kilometers long. It is spread over seventeen rounds. 85 tons of salt are required for one complete spreading.

So it is also freezing in Flanders. The Roads and Traffic Agency took conscious action last minute the decision to also allow gritters to be driven out on Sunday evening, says spokeswoman Veva Daniels. The Flemish roads will therefore also be sprinkled.
