RIVM warns: air quality in some places is very bad

The air quality is very poor in some parts of the country today and tomorrow. This is due to smog as a result of ozone, says the RIVM.

The smog can lead to respiratory complaints, such as coughing and shortness of breath, worsening of asthma symptoms and a decrease in lung function. Irritation to the eyes, nose and throat also occurs.

People who are sensitive to air quality are better off staying indoors, says the RIVM. And in any case, they shouldn’t be doing heavy work outdoors. The air quality is particularly poor in the late afternoon and early evening.

The RIVM also warned about poor air quality last weekend. Smog from ozone is created by the accumulation of air pollution on sunny days, when there is little wind. Pollutants are converted into ozone under the influence of sunlight.

See Teletext page 711 for this the current air quality.
