River Plate announced Friday that it was shutting down its facilities and refusing to participate in a Cup match scheduled for Saturday, citing a “force majeure” linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Following the recommendations of the World Health Organization and attentive to the various resolutions of the national government and the City of Buenos Aires concerning the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), River Plate declares that the club will remain closed in its entirety at from Saturday March 14 for an indefinite period, “he said in a statement.
River “has decided that, for reasons of force majeure, he will not appear for the match on Saturday March 14 against Atlético Tucuman”, as part of the Superleague Cup (competition disputed by the residents of D1 Argentina ). “The competition involves risks to the health of the professional workforce and all those involved in an official match,” said the club.
The Argentine government has decided, among other measures, to play championship matches behind closed doors. The meetings of Copa Libertadores (the South American equivalent of the European Champions League) and the South American qualification matches for the 2022 World Cup have also been suspended by the Regional Confederation (Conmebol).
