Rising Measles Cases and Vaccination Concerns in Lebanon

“Lebanese Debate”

Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases, and in a percentage of cases the complications of the disease may be severe and even life-threatening.

Representative Dr. Abd al-Rahman al-Bizri confirms that “there is a rise in measles cases in Lebanon, and most cases are recorded in children between the ages of one and two years, and the main cause of infection is the absence of vaccination or not taking an adequate dose of it.”

Al-Bizri explains in an interview with the “Lebanese Debate” that “the measles virus appears every 4 or 5 years in Lebanon, because the rate of immunity is declining, and parents are delaying in vaccinating their children, and the latest information issued by the World Health Organization in cooperation with UNICEF showed a decrease in the rates of routine vaccination of Lebanese children by 1 percent.” 31%, so there is a wave of measles among children, and it poses a threat to children between the ages of one and two years.

And he advises all parents, that they “should re-contact with primary health care centers or with pediatricians and family doctors in order to apply the vaccination process in a proper manner, in order to avoid any new wave of measles, which may be large.”

And he added, “Several years ago, we changed the vaccination protocols in Lebanon in a way that suits our situation. Therefore, we hope that parents will quickly vaccinate their children, especially since measles vaccination protects against infection with rubella.”

Al-Bizri affirmed, “Measles is a cruel and contagious virus, and it poses a great danger, especially if the infected children have a high temperature,” stressing that “there is a need for a very high vaccination rate among the Lebanese population to prevent the spread of the disease.”
