Rising Concerns over Minor Involvement in Amsterdam Explosions

Halsema writes, among other things, about ‘a case in which a minor indicated during his interrogation that he had committed acts under threat’. And: “It is suspected that this occurs in several cases.” But according to the mayor, it is difficult to prove this, partly because young people are afraid of reprisals and therefore keep their mouths shut.

Youngest suspect is 13

This year and last year, according to Halsema, 38 suspects have been prosecuted for involvement in 27 explosions in Amsterdam. Twelve of them are minors, the youngest is 13. Not all cases have been dealt with by the court, but in the cases where this has happened, the highest sentence imposed is six years in prison.

There have been many explosions in Amsterdam in the past year, just like in many other major cities. Halsema previously said that the explosions are widespread across the city and that there are no so-called ‘hotspots’, making it difficult to predict where the next explosion will be.
