Rishi Sunak, former UK finance minister during the Boris Johnson administration, won the first of the votes among conservative deputies who will decide on the successor of the outgoing prime minister.
In elections that will announce the new leader of the Conservative Party, ergo the new president of the United Kingdom, Sunak reached 88 votes, while former defense minister Penny Mordaunt managed to add 67 supports among her peers.
The former Secretary of State for Equalities Kemi Badenoch, with 40 votes, the Attorney General of the State, Suella Braverman, who climbed to 32, who heads the foreign affairs portfolio, Liz Truss, with 50, and Tom Tugendhat, who reached 37 votes.
The current finance minister and Sunak’s successor, Nadhim Zahawi, and former health minister Jeremy Hunt, did not reach the 30 supporters needed to continue in the race and have been prevented from continuing. Today the elections continue to pave the way for a new leader.
