Right, Terror | The Conservatives’ program committee proposes a 50-year sentence for terrorists

The Conservatives’ program committee believes that the penalties for terrorists must be sharpened.

The Conservatives are in the process of putting together a new political program before the election. According to several recent polls, there may be good reason for a new political program. The party risks breaking the magic barrier by finding three choices in a row.

An important issue for the Conservatives leading up to the election will be security. And the party believes the world has changed so much in recent years that the punishment for terrorism must go up.

Today, the penalty for the most serious cases of terror is 30 years. But the Conservatives suggest that it should be tightened to 50 years.

– Manshaus is the latest example here in Norway, but we are still seeing new forms of terror. Recently in Germany, a man took a car and mowed down motorcyclists on the highway. Gross terror must be punished more severely, says Mahmoud Farahmand.

He is a member of the program committee with a background from the Armed Forces and has worked for a number of years with security.

– There are several reasons why terrorism should be punished more severely. One is that it is extremely vicious. It is aimed at innocent people. You may like it or not, but Norway has changed, says Farahmand.

– Do you think terrorists are deterred by stricter punishment?

– It is difficult to know exactly what the outcome will be, but we must definitely do what we can. Those who will die for the cause will probably do so anyway. But here it is a matter of taking away those who consider it, says Farahmand.

Other parties have expressed skepticism about increased penalties. The only party outside the Conservative Party that has made it clear they want to increase the penalties is the Progress Party.

– Will other parties agree to this?

– I hope so. We need a tightening. We as a party for law and order must lead. And after all, there is no question of people being thrown into a dark cave. Rehabilitation is an important part of this, says Farahmand.

In 2016, the party proposed increasing the sentences to 40 years for terrorism. But it did not get approval in the Storting. Other austerity measures by the government have also been voted down.

– What makes you think you’ll get through it now?

– A lot has changed since 2016. We have terror from both right-wing extremist and Islamist terror. We also see other types of terrorist groups coming on the scene. It is likely that we can get support for it. This is not just about foreign fighters and Islamist terror, but just as much about right-wing extremists, says Farahmand.
