RI Will Have the World’s Largest Petrochemical Plant!

Jakarta

The government is developing an integrated green industrial area in North Kalimantan. According to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the largest petrochemical factory in the world will be built in the industrial area.

Luhut said the North Kalimantan Industrial Estate has an area of up to 30 thousand hectares. The total investment will be US$ 132 billion until 2029.

Interestingly, in this industrial area there will be a giant petrochemical plant which is predicted to be the largest in the world.

“So this is a very large number, and we will have the largest petrochemical in the world. So we invest US$ 56 billion and the outcome is US$ 67 billion,” said Luhut at the Grand Launching of BKPM Sustainable Investment, at the Fairmont Hotel, South Jakarta, Thursday (17/3/2022).

With this green industrial area, whatever the community needs later, it can be produced domestically without having to import it. Including drugs.

Luhut opened a sad experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time Indonesia was still dependent on India for paracetamol. As a result, when India went into lockdown, people had difficulty getting paracetamol.

“In the past, we imported all the raw materials too much, and we learned that during COVID-19. In India, at the time of the lockdown, we didn’t have paracetamol,” said Luhut.

But now, he said, Indonesia could produce its own paracetamol because it realized that it could no longer depend on imported products.

“Now we have that effect. So we reduce our imports per day, I think it’s almost 40 percent,” concluded Luhut.
