Rhenald Kasali’s Insightful Discussion on Parenting and Technological Challenges at Kebonrojo Post Office in Surabaya

This afternoon’s discussion at the Kebonrojo Post Office in Surabaya with business practitioner Rhenald Kasali went smoothly. Dozens of audience members asked the Professor of Economics at the University of Indonesia (UI) critical questions.

Of the dozens of questions that were dominated by parents who expressed disquiet about the process parenting and technological developments that are feared to affect children.

Cahyo expressed his concern that his son, who is studying medicine at a university in Surabaya, has started to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in carrying out his duties.

“That’s easy, the research is already in AI, my son said. Even though basic skills should be mastered,” said Cahyo to Rhenald in the forum, Sunday (9/7/2023).

Apart from Cahyo, there is also Laksmi, a mother who is confused about how to embrace her children in this digital era. According to Laksmi, children nowadays are quite idealistic with all the information they receive from the internet.

Responding to these questions, Rhenald answered quite clearly. That a child must be educated through challenge or resistance to form mind set them.

Grow it mindset. We have to educate children about attitudes (towards technology). Children must be trained with challenges,” said Rhenald.

The Pos Indonesia commissioner compared the challenge to the child as, if toddlers from various regions are given a pencil and paper, they will draw the paper in the same way.

“All the children anywhere must be filled with doodles,” he added.

But after the children go through the learning process in understanding an object and understanding the art of painting. So the results will be different.

The learning process is what Rhenald meant as a challenge that must be taught to children. In addition, children who are trained to overcome challenges cannot be matched by technology.

He also believes that people who are used to dealing with problems and challenges will tend to be happier. “Those who are happier face challenges,” he said.

In the forum, Rhenald advised that Indonesia’s challenges in the future would be very diverse. Starting from food, technology, to the geopolitical crisis.

Therefore, he said Indonesia still needs more science graduates. It aims to create various innovations in the future.

“Must learn critical thinking. To find innovation, read algorithms, and create future technology for Indonesia,” he said. (wld/iss)
