The area around the Mussert Wall is being renovated. The municipality of Ede and the owner of the Goudsberg campsite in Lunteren, where the structure is located, have decided on this. It should become a memorial place where visitors can experience how events from the past influence today’s lives, writes Omroep Gelderland.

The Goudsberg was a National Socialist complex between 1936 and 1945. The masonry wall on the complex was built in the 1930s and was used by NSB leader Anton Mussert for speeches at massive party meetings at Pentecost. It is the only remaining NSB building in the Netherlands.

The grandfather of the current campsite owner took over the land in 1951. The much-discussed Wall of Mussert was named a national monument in 2018, after the campsite owner wanted to demolish the structure in order to build holiday homes.

‘Chardened history’

Now the parties involved have agreed on a plan to turn the area around the wall into a special place. “The wall has a charged history and association in the community of Lunteren and far beyond,” councilor Peter de Pater told the AD.

The first sketch of the plans has already been made. A ‘playful and soft’ work of art will be placed on the forecourt of the national monument. De Pater hopes to come up with a more detailed design within six months, he told the newspaper. “If this doesn’t work, it will never work again.”
