In many companies, notebooks are replaced in three to five-year cycles when they are already fully depreciated and the “next business day” warranty from the manufacturer has expired. Employees can typically buy these notebooks at a residual price, or companies can take advantage of offers from companies that buy and refurbish them for resale. However, in some firms, notebooks are kept for longer and gradually trickle down to lower-level employees until they become electronic waste.
The question arises: is it worth salvaging such machines? Perhaps for less demanding home use… This was the subject of a discussion that gradually turned into a (constructive) argument. To investigate further, iDNES.cz took an eight-year-old Dell Latitude E5550, which was waiting to be sent to a recycling facility, and tested whether it could still be useful.
