Reviving a Discharged Car Battery: Baking Soda Method and Tips

When the car battery is discharged, many drivers get stressed and don’t know what to do. After all, this promises not only difficulties in starting the engine, but also means an unexpected purchase of a new battery. However, there is one way to extend the resource using improvised means. The battery with which we start work must be of the “serviceable” type. In the case of such batteries, caps are visible in the upper part, which may also be covered with a common plastic panel.

However, if the battery is one of the so-called “unserviceable” ones, then it is easier to discard it than to try to “revive” it. To restore the battery, you need to rinse its “insides” with baking soda, writes AutoMedia.bg. But simply putting the soda in the battery will not work, and even worse – the device will simply “die”.

Therefore, first, we unscrew the already mentioned caps and completely drain the old electrolyte through them. Then we pour warm distilled water into a clean bottle and pour baking soda into it. Add as much as can be dissolved. It is important that no sediment remains. Then we fill the battery with the resulting composition and leave it for ten minutes to start the reaction.

Then you need to proceed to the following steps: remove the “liquid”, rinse the “innards” of the battery with clean distilled water, and that’s it. The process is complete. It remains to fill in a new electrolyte with a density of 1.28 and then charge the battery. The battery should be fully functional after about 12 hours.

How does the method work? The fact is that by washing the plates inside the battery with a soda solution, we get the reaction of this same soda and acid. This is how the salts that settle over time on the plates are washed away. That is, the desulphurization process is underway.

But there is also a minus. With this procedure, the very composition of the plates is partially exfoliated, but unevenly. That is, if you clean it often with this method, it will significantly reduce the resource of the device. There are also accumulators that cannot be affected by this trick. The defect is easily seen by shining the cells through the holes with a flashlight. If there is a broken cell or visible rust, then the battery is a waste: it cannot be repaired.
