Revitalizing the Finances of The Gold Cup Theater: A Look into the Best Season in History

We are not going to lie to each other, there has been better in the life of theaters and more precisely in their finances. The Gold Cup in Rochefort is no exception, despite a great win-back from the public last season with 22,640 spectators who sat on the red velvet seats of the Italian-style theatre. “After the 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 seasons which were records, this is the best season in the history of our house. After the Covid and its brakes, we have come back well to reach our cruising speed and reconnect with the public thanks to outstanding shows like “Sentinels”, “Misericordia” and the second edition of “Tadam” our circus festival ” , announces director Franck Becker.

The play “Les gros patinent bien” by Olivier Martin-Salvan and Pierre Guillois received the Molière award for public theater two years ago and is going on a world tour.

We lower the sails

Alas, attendance is not everything and the theaters, like the rest, bear the full brunt of the increase in prices. Starting with the energy tariffs which increase the bill for fluids paid by the City from 50,000 to 100,000 euros. And this despite radiators set at their lowest last year. As a result, the municipal subsidy is cut by 50,000 euros. Added to this are reductions in aid from the Region (- 5,000 euros), the Department (- 4,000 euros) and the Agglo (- 5,000 euros). So here is a reduced budget of 64,000 euros for the coming season.

Catherine Hiegel will play in “Les gratitudes, a text by Delphine de Vigan.

Giovanni Citizens-Cesi

So inevitably, the programmer that is the director had to reduce the sails in certain places. This year, the subsidized stage will host 38 shows compared to 43 last year and will offer 92 performances, compared to 117 in 2022-2023. Despite a project of labeling “art, childhood, youth under agreement” with the ministry, the young public will be housed in the same boat. Even if cultural action and artistic education remain at the heart of the project, there will be two fewer shows and the number of places reserved for school children will be 5,380 instead of 7,370 last year, a reduction of 27%. It is likely to cause coughing among spectators when making reservations… And even more so when they discover that all prices increase by one euro.

“Oh boy! », a play taken from a novel by Marie-Aude Murail and offered by the Tréteaux de France, is one of the shows for young audiences of the season.

We have concocted a season without skimping on artistic proposals.

The only weapon of the Gold Cup is not to rhyme these restrictions with poor quality. “We concocted a season without skimping on the artistic proposals”, reassures Franck Becker who had to juggle between his desires and his means. According to a political and democratic issue, the director sums up his season in two words: grow and entertain. “It’s about laughing other than in a digestive way, but in an intelligent way in order to reflect in joy and good humor. »

The company L’Annex will play “Salle des fêtes” on January 31st and February 1st.

Emotion and reflection

The fundamentals are therefore not negotiable. By attending the Coupe d’Or, emotion will be guaranteed with “Time to tell” (circus, October 13 and 14), ” Hug “ (music, December 12), Albin de la Simone (music, February 7), “Ensemble chorégraphique” (dance, March 5 and 6) or even “No one if discovered” with Olivier Martin-Salvan (theatre, May 21 and 22) , without forgetting the two great moments of theater with “Gratitudes” with Catherine Hiegel (January 12 and 13) or “Le songe” premiered in Avignon this summer (December 19 and 20).

But the reflection will also await the spectator at the corner of the wood thanks to “Grandmother Project” around the acrobatic lift with five senior volunteers (circus, 25 and 27 January); or with “ Portrait of Ludmilla as Nina Simone around racism (music, at the opening of the season on October 5 and 6), without forgetting “Party Hall” on neo-rurals living in the countryside (theatre, January 31 and February 1).

“Since I was born”, a show for young audiences, will be offered at the Coupe d’Or and at Fouras.

Finally, the last axis of the season will rhyme with shared enthusiasm in unifying projects such as “ The big ones skate well “, Molière Prize for Public Theater 2021 (theatre, from April 9 to 12), “ The Ostrich Complex “(circus, November 21 and 22), “ cabane clan (circus, from March 19 to 23) and “Les dodos” (circus, from April 30 to May 4).

“Portrait of Ludmilla en Nina Simone” by the Kaïros company will open the season on October 5 in Tonnay-Charente and on October 6 at the Coupe d’Or.

Theater outside the walls

Of course, the partnerships continue with La Sirène for a concert by Robert Finley (November 24), but also with La Coursive for the musical « Women of the year » (January 16), the play by Wadji Wouawad “Mother” with Christine Ockrent (February 15) and the play of the Comédie Française ” Flea in the ear “ according to Feydeau (March 7). Without forgetting the links that remain forged with the cities of Tonnay-Charente (3 shows), Marennes (4), Fouras (4) and for the first time in Breuil-Magné (1). Nor the circus show “Clan Cabane” which will shine on the Agglo Rochefort Océan in Tonnay-Charente, Port-des-Barques, Fouras, Soubise and Saint-Agnant.

We scrape the bottoms of the drawers to make the third edition of “Tadam! »

As a highlight, the public will find the circus festival “Tadam! » from April 26 to May 5 with free outdoor shows and only one paying “The Dodos” under a marquee. Even if finances are down, Franck Becker is keen on this third edition. “We are scraping the bottom of drawers to make it exist because this popular event has found its audience, but is also a great way to win over new spectators. Even with less money, the public theater keeps culture for everyone in sight.

“Les basketteuses de Bamako” is a circus show by Thomas Guérineau.

Thomas Guerineau

And always

The accessibility policy also remains relevant with “Time to tell” which will be translated into sign language, and three other shows in audio description: “Salle des fêtes”, “Les gros patinent bien” and “La puce à l’ ‘ear “. As for four years, Odile Grosset-Grange (“The cat in the photo”May 16 and 17) and Simon Delattre (“Everyone is here”, April 4 and 5) are the associate artists of the theatre. And of course, we will find the preparation workshops for the show, the family workshops and the courses and workshops for all.

“Les dodos”, deprogrammed in 2020 because of the Covid, will be the only paid show and under the marquee of the circus festival “Tadam! »
