Nintendo Switch Sports is the first copyright sports game by Nintendo to bring to the hybrid console the classic gameplay of sports games developed for the Nintendo Wii. Launched on April 29, 2022, the game It is available in digital and physical versions – in this edition, the product comes with the leg strap accessory, which allows for a differentiated experience when playing soccer.

The physical edition of Nintendo Switch Sports was officially launched at retail in Brazil, and both the digital and physical product have translation and dubbing into Brazilian Portuguese.

We received the digital version sent by Nintendo to produce this review. Read our review below.

SYNOPSIS

Move around while playing soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton and chambara (sword) using the Joy-Con controls! The controls are intuitive, so just get on the court (or tracks, fields and arena) and compete. With controlled movements, you can curve a bowling ball, add a spin to a tennis ball, or even use a Joy-Con controller with the included leg strap accessory when taking penalties in soccer.

Friends and family can play with you on the same console or online. Additionally, a seventh sport is slated to be added in a free update in the middle of the second half of this year. Get ready to play golf!

Play online and face off against opponents that are near or far to get in-game rewards or try to make it to the Pro league.

Take on opponents from around the world and strive to reach the Pro league in all sports. When playing online with random opponents, exchange points earned for in-game rewards such as clothing, sports accessories, gear and more for your avatar. The item selection will be updated every week, so check back often to see what’s new!

NINTENDO SWITCH SPORTS ANALYSIS

The experience that especially helped the Nintendo Wii to stand out in the global market is now complete on Nintendo Switch as well. Big N’s sports game for its hybrid console is a sequel to Wii Sports (2006) and was the missing addition to the catalog of games that make good use of Joy-Con motion sensors.

With six sports currently available, and the promise that golf will be added for free in the second half of 2022, the strongest point of Nintendo Switch Sports is precisely the fluidity of movement. Everything you do in your living room is well reproduced in game, which generates a lot of satisfaction. The tutorials are also good and contribute to this.

The Nintendo Switch Sports graphics are also worth mentioning. The game is visually very beautiful, especially the Olympic complex Spocco Square and sports courts. Although without major innovation other than gender fluidity, it also has to be said that avatar customization – Sportsmate – offers a satisfying experience, with a nostalgic touch offered by the possibility of using a character Miioriginally created for the Nintendo Wii.

The Sportsmate customization also has a degree of challenge, which is something interesting. They exist packs of rewards that alternate as the days go by. To receive them, you need to score each time you play until you reach 100 points, and then choose one of the packs so that the game randomly chooses an item. Thus, little by little, you will progress and increase your customization options.

Not only I, but the entire Nintendo community in Brazil were happy for the localization of Nintendo Switch Sports to Brazilian Portuguese. This was also well done in the game’s texts, and the dubbing is important, but it doesn’t serve as a conduit for the fun, as it occurs in a punctual way.

Overall, the Nintendo Switch Sports experience is satisfactory, with no FPS drops or graphical issues.

The main weakness of Nintendo Switch Sports is the lack of clarity regarding the Pro leagues for each sport. There is no information on what you need to do to unlock this option. There is also no indication that progress is being made towards enabling the feature. I hope a future update can bring user experience improvements so that Pro leagues become more engaging and easier to understand.

Another point that could be better explained concerns the differences in the game modes of each sport when played online against random opponents, in multiplayer local or multiplayer with a closed group of friends and family.

I had the opportunity to play both the first and second options, not having the close-group experience against online opponents, and I believe that warnings on loading or some information on the sports screens could tell you that a different experience is available to enjoy in another game mode.

Nintendo Switch Sports hints that it will be possible to move around Spocco Square

It is also noteworthy that some loading screens suggest that it is possible to move around Spocco Square. For example, a screen says that the library is full of books that tell the story of football. But so far it is not possible to go to her. I hope this possibility materializes in the future. updatebecause otherwise it won’t make sense if the game doesn’t have this mechanic.

Read below for a brief analysis of each sport individually.

Badminton

Very similar to tennis, but particularly I find the sport less attractive compared to the previous one. The experience playing badminton is pleasant.

Bowling

One of my favorites on Nintendo Switch Sports. Bowling is one of the most immersive and pleasurable experiences in the game. The competitive aspect is a point that makes the sport even better on the console.

Chambara (sword)

My other favorite. Sword fighting has three modalities and, in all, the experience is incredible! The movements are very fluid and precise in this sport that takes place in a small circular arena, where you have to knock your opponent out. Playing chambara is very challenging and satisfying!

Football

I enjoyed playing football, I find the way the sport was brought to Nintendo Switch Sports interesting, but sometimes it’s not the best experience. A determining factor for this is the way to pass the ball, which requires the movement with the Joy-Con to be done while pressing the ZR button, so that the ball goes to the next teammate who is on your straight. This is a bit truncated.

Allied to this, many players seem not to know this (although it is well explained in the tutorial) or have difficulty using the feature. So, if you don’t play in a closed team, football ends up being difficult to win as it requires you to be very individualistic, which is not simple on the small court of Nintendo Switch Sports.

Sneakers

Playing tennis is a good and pleasant experience. It’s a sport that perfectly matches the Joy-Con’s movements.

Volleyball

I also enjoyed volleyball, but I believe it is the most common sport in which Sportsmate has mobility problems. This happens mainly with regard to timing that you must have to do moves like headlines and lifting. Despite that, I consider it a good experience.

VERDICT

Nintendo Switch Sports takes advantage of the best of Joy-Con to offer dynamic experiences and, in sports like bowling and chambara, with a good dose of immersion. Far from being innovative like its predecessor and with room for necessary improvements, it is still a game that deserves to be checked out by Nintendo Switch lovers, especially if you have one or more people at home to play on. multiplayer local.
