REVIEW: Charming, funny and versatile. Harry Styles in Prague for the first time

The former member of the popular boy band One Direction embarked on a solo career five years ago, when he presented his debut Sign of the Times. He immediately released an album that received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and immediately went on a worldwide tour. Since then, he has been reaping one success after another and has several interesting firsts to his credit, even outside the music industry. For example, he was the first man to appear on the cover of the American Vogue magazine.

Harry Edward Styles was originally supposed to perform in Prague two years ago. However, the Love on Tour was postponed twice due to the coronavirus. For Friday’s concert, he chose the British alternative rock band Wolf Alice as an opening act. By the way, she has already performed several times in the Czech Republic. She fulfilled her role passably despite the imperfect sound system and the audience received her with enthusiasm.

Harry Styles arrived on stage at a quarter to ten and opened the performance with the rhythmic song Music For a Sushi Restaurant. Fortunately, the sound problem has already been fixed. It quickly became clear that he was a born entertainer. He constantly communicated with the fans, read the inscriptions from the banners, which he then humorously commented on, and thanked in one piece. “Thank you very much indeed. It’s only thanks to you that I can do this job, which I love above all else,” he stated, for example.

Finally, he started an interview with one of the fans, who confided that she was nine months pregnant. She was holding a black balloon with the words “Boy or a girl?” The singer finally pierced him to a big ovation and revealed in front of the whole arena that he was expecting a boy.

When it comes to singing, it’s hard to fault Styles. In short, he is an excellent singer and his intonation was unmistakable throughout the evening. Besides, he has energy to spare. In the songs, he danced, jumped and encouraged the people in the arena to move. Not that it was needed, though. The audience rose from their seats right at the beginning and remained standing until the end of the concert.

The setlist consisted mainly of songs from the last album Harry’s House, from which he sang almost all of them. From this came a pleasant variety. Slower songs (Matilda, Boyfriends) created a tense atmosphere in the hall, only to be replaced by more energetic ones (Late Night Talking, Daylight, Keep Driving). The nostalgic pacifier was the legendary What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction. However, he didn’t forget the most popular pieces from the previous records either. He kept Sign of the Times and Watermelon Sugar as encores.

The strength of his repertoire lies not only in the melodiousness, which is inspired by various musical trends and Styles can play with it nicely. Of course, this is essential for a pop musician. The catchy lyrics he possesses are also an important component, and the fans in the hall sang them along with him.

A native of the English town of Redditch often makes it known that he wishes to create a relaxed atmosphere and a sense of security for the audience at concerts. He also managed to do that at the Friday concert. By the way, he promised at the beginning that he would do everything to put on a great show. And as he said, so he did. Many girls will surely remember his first performance in Prague for a long time.
