When I returned from Turkey and it turned out that I needed an operation, I psychologically found myself in a hole. I decided that I needed to go to rehab for psychologically traumatized people. It’s time to. You cannot tell a person that he needs to go to such a place – you yourself must realize that you need it, make an independent decision that nothing else will help.
I went around in circles of bad things—leaning on things that were hurting me. I woke up every morning and won the battle: I went to training, smiled, showed everyone that I was happy. But inside, I was actually losing this battle. When I got injured and was told that I needed surgery, I again felt myself being pulled into this terrible cycle. And I decided it was time. I went to the clinic for six weeks. Everton did incredible: the club supported me 100%. I will always be grateful to them, no matter what happens in the future. They were open, honest and sincere – at a time when I was making the biggest decision of my life, it was incredibly important.
I’m glad I could do it. People perceive rehab as something scary, but I could never imagine how much it would give me. I was in a terrible position.
A lot happened to me as a child, and I could never realize and admit to myself that I was doing stupid things for which I now blame myself. But if you rewind… Not everything was under control. Understanding this, learning from this, helped me a lot with other things. Let go of some things, destructive feelings that I held on to and that slowed me down and threw me back,” said Dele Alli.
