Revealed! This is the reason KCI has just submitted the import of used Japanese KRL

Jakarta

PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) is in the process of applying Japan’s second-hand KRL imports. The imported KRL is planned to be used to replace trains that are entering retirement age.

The reason for the new KCI wanting to import used Japanese KRLs was also revealed. This happened because previously KCI was affected by COVID-19 so it did not dare to submit a train procurement.

“Indeed, KCI is just submitting it now because yesterday he did not dare to submit it because he was still in the Corona condition,” said Special Staff to the Minister of BUMN Arya Sinulingga in Bandung, Monday night (6/3/2023).

Arya continued that KCI’s condition was difficult, so he was just now submitting it Japan’s second-hand KRL imports. “Indeed, it was a bit difficult for KCI. Because yesterday it was still Corona, so only now has he dared to propose his needs,” he said.

Meanwhile, PT KAI (Persero) VP Public Relations Joni Martinus explained, when talking about retirement trains, it is closely related to safety aspects.

“Actually, when we talk about the carriages having to be retired or no longer being operated, this is of course closely related to safety. This is very closely related to safety, there is a safety audit there, there are factors safety that has to be considered,” he said.

He said, when KCI applied for a permit Japan’s second-hand KRL imports then there is a calculation. He continued, if the KRL is retired and not replaced, it will reduce the train’s transport capacity. On the other hand, people’s need for trains continues to increase.

“We want people’s mobility not to be disrupted, service to remain good. We know for ourselves that the community’s need for KRL is very high, so of course we have to maintain that,” he explained.

However, he said, in principle KAI supports domestic production. KAI itself has utilized domestic trains.

“Including KRL, of course we will also make maximum use of domestic production, but it can’t be fast. To make a new train, it takes a 2-3 year process. Meanwhile, the community’s needs cannot be postponed,” he explained.
