Revamping 3FM: The Search for a New Head of Music and Changes in Store

[BLOG] It seems that in the Radio House at the NPO 3FM department they have now realized that a market share of between 1 and 2% is far too little for what was once the country’s largest pop station. The basis for a station is of course the music. 3FM, led by music chief Roosmarijn Reijmer, still happily programs one unknown record or flop after another, preferably with a big guitar in it. After a year without positive results, 3FM’s station chief Menno de Boer finally sees that things have to change and the search is therefore on for a new, more audience-friendly head of music. Roosmarijn, who was a deejay for VPRO on 3FM for many years, is at home (paid). But more changes are coming to NPO’s problem child.

Roosmarijn Reijmer, quite a nice woman. In 1998, when I worked there as a deejay and was part of the music editorial team, she was ‘head of internet’ at 3FM. That was 25 years ago! I once went out for a pizza with her at that time and she finished it even faster than I did, which in itself is great. She of course experienced the successful years of the station and copied the music trick from Basyl de Groot, now head of music at NPO Radio 2. And there we immediately encounter two problems: she still programs 3FM as in the successful years, when you could get away with a lot. . And she has been there for far too long, completely stuck at her NPO desk. Became far too entwined with the record companies that have spoiled her for years with one scoop after another, concert tickets to give away, etc. Her music profile is VPRO, which, to keep the peace, is mixed with some hits. Has never worked, I’m in two minds.

Another mistake that Roosmarijn and her music team make is that they program many records with the ‘3FM DNA’. In other words, the songs that 3FM has made ‘big’ or that they have been playing for years. But the people who used to listen to 3 now all listen to NPO Radio 2. Let them play ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ by Garbage and ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ by Wheatus. Just make 3FM programming much more accessible, it doesn’t have to be super commercial, but it does make it more listenable by removing flops from the past and too much unknown, new junk that they are so enthusiastic about at the VPRO. Spot the good new tracks that are on their way to becoming a hit, not all of them are top-notch junk. Let Roosmarijn choose the music for Annemieke on 2, who prefers to only play B sides, despite the title of her program (A Lunch). At 3FM, the music software has been used for years as a card index, terms such as ‘rotations’, ‘day parting’, ‘core artists’, ‘mood’, ‘super recurrents’: well, we certainly know what a good record is. is! So go, make that playlist by hand. Still plenty of time.

The POWNED afternoon show with Barend van Deelen proves that 3FM can score. It scores about 4%, more than double the station average. He is one of the names in the Glass House this year, together with Mart Meijer and his female co-host Sophie Hijlkema, that’s what I hear. Should actually do the morning show there, that Barend. Furthermore, 3FM will receive a completely new jingle package, not from Top Format or VHU but from Wisebuddah. Hopefully they will get rid of that FM nonsense and just call it NPO Radio 3 and make a fresh start, the 3FM brand is completely destroyed. It will also have to be done in Menno de Boer’s second year as channel boss, otherwise he can add his name to the long list of people and disc jockeys who could not get 3 to work either. Speaking of deejays: tell those jocks that they don’t have to feed Wikipedia facts about artists. Let’s talk about something other than the music!

Another slight annoyance with many contemporary DJs is the bald talk all the time. Just use good design and fillers! Makes your show and therefore you much faster and more energetic. When you talk about a ‘bed’ or intro, make sure you move rhythmically, so that it becomes a whole. Here’s an example of a talk I did last Friday that highlights this. By the way, the music comes from the end credits of a Netflix docuseries, always a good source for background music!
