Retz – 111 years old: the association visited the oldest cinema in Austria

The Harzhauser family has been running Austria’s oldest cinema since 1911. Last week, members of the Retz computer club (CCR) were able to take a look at what is now the last cinema in the Hollabrunn district.

Leopold Harzhauser and his son toured the city cinema and reported on the development of their cinema since then. “From celluloid film to now digital presentation techniques, from silent films with piano accompaniment to the latest sound reinforcement technology, they have provided a very practical account of how this profession developed,” reports JRC President Walter Fallheier .

The issue was also addressed, what is the challenge of moving forward with all these steps as an owner and making the appropriate investments. Above all, competition from other media and the pandemic period presented an enormous challenge for the Harzhauser.

Fallheier thanked for the impressive presentation before all attendees attended the evening’s cinema screening and said: “For a change, a visit to the cinema is a useful and enjoyable evening activity.”
