The more I hear about Return to Moria, the more excited I am that it’s a little while away and will be released.
The upcoming survival game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria has just received a release date and it looks like it will be released quite soon. We will enter the dwarven homelands starting on October 24th.
Return to Moria game director Jon-Paul Dumont of Free Range Games spoke with IGN at Gamescom to share more details about the lore and gameplay we’ll find in Moria. Unlike other crafting games where you start with basic wooden tools, your dwarven experts move straight into forging and metalworking as you work your way through the darkness.
Moria has familiar landmarks, Dumont explains, including the Dimrill Gate and Endless Stairs, but everything in between is procedurally generated. And if you think you’ve seen the Khazad-dûm bridge in previous trailers, you’re right. Dumont says that one goal in Moria is rebuilding the bridge when Gimli issues a call calling dwarves to help retrieve the mines.
An expected game
As we’ve already heard, sound is a factor in Moria’s fight. Making noise through mining will attract orcs and eventually trolls, forcing players to manage the light and noise they generate, including dwarven song.
There’s quite a lot about singing, actually. Teaming up with your co-op partners in song can help you mine more efficiently or open up new areas. As someone with a co-op gang that already leans towards a bit of improvised singing, I quite like the idea of mining songs.
Return to Moria will have up to 8-player co-op mode available to PC players when it launches on October 24th on the Epic Games Store for $40.
