Return to Monkey Island has been unveiled

On Monday afternoon, Devolver Digital unveiled Return to Monkey Island – a new game in the well-known adventure game series.

Return to Monkey Island is made by Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox – as developed point-and-click adventure Thimbleweed Park – in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games. Ron Gilbert is the original creator of The Secret of Monkey Island, and thus returns to the series that made him famous.

The game will be released in 2022 and you can watch a trailer above.

Establishes new history

One of the more ingenious moves taken here is that the game picks up the thread after The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Thus, the new sequel ignores the games made after these two, namely The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island and the episodic Tales of Monkey Island.

This is probably due to the fact that Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert did not work much on any of the games after the first two, and has long expressed a desire to make its own sequel detached from the other games. It now seems as if he is allowed to.

A few years ago, Ron Gilbert made a list of what he wanted out of a third Monkey Island game. It remains to be seen if any of these ideas emerge here.

With him on the team is Ron Gilbert with several of the original developers from the first Monkey Island games. Among other things, Dave Grossman will be involved in writing the story and designing the game, as he also did with the first two Monkey Island games, while Michael Land is behind the music together with Peter McConnel and Clint Bajakian who he worked with during the LucasArts days.
