Retail trade turnover decreased by 0.6% in May

In May 2020, compared to May 2019, the retail trade turnover decreased by 0.6%, according to Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) aggregated calendar adjusted data at constant prices. Retail trade of food products increased by 1.6%. The volume of retail trade of non-food products, excluding retail sale of automotive fuel, decreased by 3.9%, motor fuels – increased by 3.3%.

Compared to May 2019, the most significant increase in turnover was in retail sale of electrical household appliances (by 25.0%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (by 16.5%) and non-specialized stores selling non-food products (by 7.3%). ). The most significant decrease in turnover was in retail sale via stalls and markets (by 34.2%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (by 27.8%) and retail sale of information and communication technology equipment in specialized stores (by 6.3%).

The total turnover of retail trade enterprises at current prices, excluding the effect of calendar days, decreased by 4.7%.

In May 2020, compared to April, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 7.8%. Retail trade of food products increased by 2.8%. Retail trade in non-food products, excluding retail sale of automotive fuel, increased by 13.4%, retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 5.4%.

Compared to the previous month, the most significant increase in turnover was in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (by 73.9%), retail sale of information and communication technology equipment in specialized stores (by 31.8%) and non-specialized stores selling mainly non-food products (by 31.1%). The most significant decline in turnover was in retail sale via mail order houses or in Internet shops (by 7.1%) and retail sale of electrical household appliances (by 4.7%).

In May 2020, compared to April, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises at current prices, seasonally adjusted, increased by 11.7%.

The increase in turnover compared to April in certain sectors was influenced by the decision to lift the ban on shopping centers from working on weekends and public holidays from 12 May.
