Seattle (dpa) – Amazon is using its technology for shopping without cash registers for the first time in the area of a full-fledged supermarket. The new Seattle grocery store unveiled on Tuesday is a good 2,300 square feet.

The first stores with the technology under the brand “Amazon Go” initially had an area of just over 110 square meters. Early last year, Amazon opened its first store that was about half the size of the average supermarket.

In Amazon stores, customers simply take items off the shelf and leave the store. Cameras and other sensors such as scales in the shelves register who has taken which goods. The price is debited via the app after leaving the shop.

In the years of development of the technology, according to media reports, it was a challenge for Amazon to work with larger numbers of customers.

In the USA, the online retail giant now has around 30 such stores in Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco and New York. Amazon has also been offering the technology to other retailers since last year. In March, Amazon opened the first of its kind in Europe in London. It runs just like the new big store in Seattle under the brand “Amazon Fresh”.

The world’s largest online retailer also bought the organic supermarket chain Whole Foods, but has so far retained the traditional checkout concept.
