Restriction of access to Braga Hospital

The president of the Academic Association of Braga said today that students at the University of Minho, closed due to the outbreak of covid-19, are being “understanding with the adopted measure” and that they find it “even prudent”.

Speaking to Lusa about the closure of all teaching activity and the buildings of the University of Minho (UMinho), both in Guimarães and Braga, Rui Oliveira also explained that this year’s edition of “Gata na Praia” was also canceled, as well as “all activities until April 14th”.

Gata na Praia was going to take place from April 13th to 18th, in Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, and the president of the academic association also revealed some “relief” on the part of the Portimão municipality for the cancellation of the activity.

“Of course, students, and everyone, are concerned with the situation, especially with the teaching situation since classes and exams will be affected. But they are reacting with concern and even consider the measures announced to be prudent ”, pointed out Rui Oliveira.

As for Gata na Praia, “it was a decision of the Academic Association taking into account the recommendations that the authorities have made and for the Câmara de Portimão it was also a relief”, being that, he said, “the municipality itself was going to suggest the cancellation of the activity .

There are already confirmed cases of at least two people infected with the new coronavirus in Portimão.

Today, the University of Minho announced the closure of its facilities, academic activities, meetings and exits, after a case of covid-19 was confirmed in the student community.

In addition to Gata na Praia, Start Point Academy, Academia à Conversa, Assembly of Delegates, FADU Sports Competition, Dias + por +, [email protected], FORUM Nuclei and MeetUp.

Also the Academic Bars of Braga and Guimarães, Espaço AAUM, which includes LIFTOFF – Office of the Entrepreneur, GIP – Office of Professional Insertion and Place Me. Student Support Offices in Braga and Guimarães and reprographics of the campuses will be closed.

The Covid-19 epidemic was detected in December in China and has already caused more than 4,000 deaths, with more than 114,000 infected in more than a hundred countries.

In recent days, Italy has become the most serious case of an epidemic outside China, with 463 dead and more than 9,100 infected with the new coronavirus, which can cause respiratory infections like pneumonia.

The Portuguese Government has decided to suspend all flights to or from the most affected areas in Italy, also recommending the suspension of events in open spaces with more than 5,000 people.

Portugal registers 41 confirmed cases of infection, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

DGS also reported that in Portugal a total of 375 suspected cases have been reached since the beginning of the epidemic, 83 of which are still awaiting laboratory results.

In view of the increase in cases, the Government ordered the temporary suspension of visits to hospitals, homes and prisons in the North, which has so far been the most affected.

Some educational establishments were closed, especially in the North of the country, as well as gyms, libraries, swimming pools and cinemas.
