Respiratory viruses: the worst seems to have been avoided, according to regional public health

The number of flu cases in the region is now declining, said Drr Jean-François Betala-Belinga, Medical Consultant of the Regional Department of Public Health.

Regional health recalls that the circulation of respiratory viruses seems comparable to what has been seen in recent years.

Vaccination coverage in the region may have helped reduce circulation, says Dr.r Pay Belinga.

In fact, we still had good flu and COVID vaccine coverage in the region, relatively. We can congratulate ourselves. You always have to give yourself a little pat on the back, but I think that’s something that workedhe stated in an interview.

A second wave of the flu is still possible this winter, however, warns Dr.r Pay Belinga.

However, the growing circulation of respiratory viruses in late November and December is not unrelated to the increase in the number of group A streptococcus infections also observed in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Two adults in the area died.

In total, 17 cases were identified in 2022, while in 2021 public health had counted six cases.

Bacterial infections can follow viral infections such as the flu, the regional public health agency said on Friday.
