Respiratory Virus Cases Decrease in Covasna County, Flu Vaccination Interest Declines

The number of respiratory viruses diagnosed in the week of February 12-18 shows a slight decrease in Covasna county, with 3,298 respiratory infections (compared to 3,804 in the previous week) and 690 pneumonias (compared to 821 in the previous week), according to the data of the Health Directorate Public (DSP) Covasna. The same source reported that during the mentioned period, 51 cases of influenza were clinically diagnosed (in the family doctors’ office) (compared to 49 in the previous week), but not verified by the laboratory.

“In the previous week there were 3,298 acute upper respiratory tract infections, 690 pneumonias and 51 cases of influenza uncontrolled by the laboratory were diagnosed, they were put clinically, by family doctors. Compared to the previous week, we are in about the same situation – there were 3,804 cases of acute upper respiratory tract infections, 821 pneumonias and 49 clinically confirmed cases of influenza. These are figures reported up to date by 98% of doctors”, the representative of the Department of Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases, Igyártó Gabriella, told us.

Regarding vaccination, she explained that there is a decrease in the interest of the population, most likely due to the fact that from this flu season patients have to ask their family doctor for a prescription and get the serum themselves from the pharmacy, after to return to the family doctor’s office for immunization.

“As for the compensated vaccine, 167 people have been vaccinated against influenza since the beginning of the year. It’s not a big number, we’re just working on the annual report and we noticed that in the last quarter of 2022 there were around 4,400-4,500 flu shots, and now it’s around 3,000. It can be seen that people have to walk for the vaccine and it is no longer as convenient as before. There are some who want to, they go and get vaccinated, but others say that if they have to go after the vaccine, then it’s better to leave it alone, and this can be seen in the numbers”, Gabriella Igyártó told us.

Another problem is that some people buy anti-influenza serum from pharmacies and administer it at home, without notifying their family doctor. Thus, there are discrepancies between the reports of family medicine offices regarding vaccination, and the reports of pharmacies regarding the number of doses purchased.

“We don’t know how many people took the vaccine from the pharmacy and did it at home without notifying the doctor. The problem is that this is how the doses are lost, at some point the pharmacy says that a certain amount was bought, but it will not be in accordance with the ones registered with the doctor”, explained the representative of the Department of Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases .

It recommends that people who choose to vaccinate at home notify their family doctor afterwards in order to be registered in the system.

At the national level, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Public Health, in the week of February 5-11, there were 7,398 cases of clinical flu, compared to 2,773 cases in the same week of the previous season. A total of 1,725 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza and 79 deaths have been reported since the start of the season.
