Resistance to Taliban holds out in impregnable valley | Afghanistan takeover

Panjshir is a stronghold of the Tajiks, Afghanistan’s largest minority. During the previous Taliban rule, between 1996 and 2001, Tajik Afghans were persecuted by the Taliban, who mainly belong to the Pashtung or Pathans. The resistance is now led by Ahmad Massoud, son of Ahmed Shah Massoud who rose to fame fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Together with former Afghan Vice President Amrullah Saleh, Ahmed Massoud wants to start talks with the Taliban for a ‘representative government’ in Afghanistan.
