Residents flee Syrian town after earthquake causes dam to fail

Al-Tloul, a small town in northwestern Syria near the Turkish border, escaped a 12-year civil war, but on February 6 a massive earthquake and the ensuing dam failure wiped out almost everyone in the town. Residents were forced to flee their homes.

Three local residents told Reuters the quake killed between 35 and 40 people in the town and destroyed most of the buildings in the town near the border. The town of Telur is separated from Turkey by the Orontes River.

Resident Abdelrahmen al-Jassim said that after the strong earthquake, local people found a crack in a nearby small dam and tried to reinforce it with sandbags.

But heavy rains over the past week have raised river levels and hampered earthquake relief efforts across the region.

Abudraman pointed out that around 4:00 a.m. on the 9th, the dam broke and the floodwater rushed over. The knee-high turbid water flooded fields and houses.

Reuters reported that the strong earthquake has killed at least 3,200 people in Syria, nearly 2,000 of whom live in northwestern Syria, which has fallen into a humanitarian crisis after years of bombing and isolation by Syrian government forces and allies.

Since the earthquake, there has been almost no foreign aid in northwestern Syria. On the morning of the 9th, the first United Nations (UN) convoy of six trucks came in for assistance. The situation is in stark contrast to the large-scale international rescue operation in neighboring Turkey.
