Sex workers and local residents do not intend to accept Mayor Halsema’s decision that the Erotic Center will be located in South. We spoke with Mariska Majoor, herself a former sex worker and founder of the Prostitution Information Center. After months of campaigning against the arrival of the center, she hopes to be able to turn the tide. “We will definitely take action again.”
Ever since there was talk about the arrival of an erotic center outside the city center, there has been protest from sex workers. Mariska Majoor, founder of the Prostitution Information Center, pasted posters, had coffee with Mayor Halsema and founded the so-called ‘Monster Association’.
That Monster Alliance, in which various groups such as business associations, sports clubs and residents jointly oppose the arrival of the center, collected 22,000 signatures. Now that it is known that Mayor Halsema wants the center in the South, she still says she will not let it go.

Major has major doubts about the safety of this location for both visitors and sex workers. “When I look at the place that has now been designated, it looks very unsafe,” she says. “Like everywhere else in the world, sex work is hidden away in a dark corner, outside the ring, outside the city, outside society, which confirms all prejudices and stigmas.”
Action
Halsema’s plans will be discussed in the municipal council early next year. A majority of the council supports the arrival of the erotic center in principle. It is stated in the coalition agreement of the PvdA, GroenLinks and D66.
Yet Major still hopes that the erotic center will not come into existence. “There is always a period in which we have time to convince councilors what a huge mistake they would be making if they agree to it. So I think we still have a good chance to turn the tide. We are a bunch of powerhouses.” together in this neighborhood. We will definitely continue with that,” she says.

Among the residents who live closest to the intended location of the erotic center in South, the news about its arrival is still the talk of the town today. But those conversations are anything but positive. The neighborhood even plans to collect signatures against the, as they call it, ‘terrible plan’.
