Researchers LUMC, Karolinska, want to tackle chronic RA sooner

According to the LUMC, there is currently hardly any identification of risk groups or early symptoms of RA in the Netherlands. However, early detection of RA is important for disease progression, and medical advances allow personalized prevention for high-risk groups. Physicians have a better understanding of which symptoms and biological characteristics indicate RA, as well as the influence of lifestyle on RA. Early detection and treatment of emerging RA can push the disease back to a state where medication is no longer required.

LUMC: practical application

The grant is provided by EIT Health. The Swedish Karolinska Institute, a member of EIT Health, is leading research into the effectiveness of artificial intelligence. The LUMC directs and researches the practical application of e-health and artificial intelligence.

As part of the study, people with symptoms will have the opportunity to better measure their symptoms using e-health. The data from the e-health application is analyzed using artificial intelligence. Through this analysis, the researchers aim to identify participants at high risk for RA. In addition, digital applications are used to stimulate a healthy lifestyle, which makes the disease course of RA milder.

Using AI in healthcare

“Ultimately, we want to change the care of this chronic disease,” says Dr Rachel Knevel, rheumatologist and principal investigator on behalf of the LUMC. “The current outlook for patients is a long treatment, but with early detection we can reduce the disease and even limit it drug-free. At the LUMC, we already know a lot about implementing AI in healthcare. We can use that knowledge to go through these kinds of processes more quickly. An important advantage for us as researchers, but also for the patient.”

The project is part of the CAIRELab, the knowledge and expertise team of the LUMC for AI in healthcare. CAIRELab (Clinical AI Implementation and Research Lab) focuses on the implementation and valuation of AI in medical practice. The interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare providers, data scientists and researchers, among others, ensures the application of valuable AI in clinical practice. This takes place in the LUMC, but also in collaboration with external partners.

More research on RA

last march made it Amsterdam UMC It is known that a group of researchers want to use a new imaging technique UMC to detect high-risk patients before they develop externally detectable joint swelling as a result of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). With future effective treatments on the horizon, the researchers involved hope that the development of RA can be prevented in the future. The first study with 60 patients will be launched in the coming year. The project is part of ZonMW’s Translational Research Programme.

EIT Health (Het European Institute for Innovation and Technology (in) Health) is a partnership between 140 partners from Europe: institutions and companies such as the Karolinska Institutet, Imperial College London, University of Oxford, IBM, KU Leuven, ErasmusMC, Achmea, Philips, Siemens and Roche. EIT Health stimulates the discovery of new care concepts and applications to promote health and limit the costs of care.
