A research team in Korea identified the principle that house dust mites cause atopic dermatitis and suggested a new treatment using it.

The National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) announced on the 30th that a research team led by professors Choi Young-ae, Jang Yong-hyun and Kim Sang-hyun of Kyungpook National University School of Medicine discovered an important factor responsible for the malignant link in sensitive chronic atopic dermatitis caused by house dust mites. The research results were published on the 7th of this month in the top-level international journal Allergy.

House dust mites are known to be the main culprits of atopic dermatitis. Although the positive rate of house dust mite in atopic patients reaches 68.8%, the effect of this bacteria on the patient’s skin has not been studied properly.

The research team confirmed that among numerous factors secreted from keratinocytes stimulated by house dust mite antigens, a factor called ‘IP-10’ was secreted at the highest level and verified its role. As a result, IP-10 factor was found to have a decisive effect on the representative symptoms of atopy, such as skin thickening, erythema, and increased keratin accompanied by inflammation.

Through this, the research team identified the fact that IP-10 factor activates lymphocytes in the body and acts as a cause of exacerbation and chronicity of atopic dermatitis. It also suggested a new possibility of treating atopic dermatitis by controlling this cognition.

Professor Kim said, “The research team is developing a new drug candidate that effectively controls IP-10, is less toxic and has excellent skin penetration, and is also synthesizing a nano-drug conjugate to improve drug properties.” We hope to be able to apply it,” he said.
