Research into foam layer at sea Scheveningen: ‘Algae or the wind?’

“What we now want to know is whether there were more algae in the seawater near Scheveningen than usual or whether it was the wind that was wrong,” NIOZ researcher and professor by special appointment Katja Philippart told RTL Nieuws. “If there are more algae, maybe we can see it coming.” If exceptionally high densities of the algae, the Phaeocystis globosa, occur, this can be reported.

Own initiative

The institute has been sampling seawater for 40 years. “We get forty times a year with a bucket of water from the sea, and we have that examined. We send such a sample to a specialized company in Haren, near Groningen. They analyze for us, among other things, the amount of algae, the amount of salt, how warm it is and how cloudy. “

Sample

NIOZ took a sample of the seawater in Scheveningen today. This is sent urgently to the company in Haren. “It’s on our own initiative,” says Philippart. “If these data are usable, we are happy to contribute to clarify them.”

Philipart does not know exactly when there is a definite answer. “We have all accelerated it. But it will certainly take weeks,” said the researcher.
