Research and Publications at Eduardo Sívori Museum: Advancing the Study of Argentine and Latin American Art

The file is for public consultation. Attention is provided to students of all levels, as well as undergraduate and graduate thesis students, both nationally and internationally.

The tasks developed coincide with the founding objectives of the current Eduardo Sívori museum, which were drafted by councilor Ghío in 1933 in his project to create a space dedicated to Argentine artists. They are essentially reduced to three, “… to give it the character of an effective instrument for scholars and elements of information for the general public… (and)… a valuable didactic complement (that) will aim to enlighten the popular masses of this city .”

Currently, the work carried out in the Research area remains linked to those initial objectives, but obviously updated to the new interests of the attending public and in line with digital technologies.
But the broader meaning of our work focuses on reflecting on the relationship between different artistic manifestations and the impact that they may have for a better understanding of our national identity and the role that they have in keeping social memory active. From this perspective we agree with Griselda Pollock that artistic practices as “cultural practices have a function of great social significance in the articulation of meanings to understand the world, in the negotiation of social conflicts, in the production of social subjects.”

Investigation

The activities carried out in the area specifically focus on the study of our collection through the different productions that support the exhibitions. These are of two types: the patrimonial and the samples of the most representative national artists, either individually or collectively. In the texts produced, special emphasis is placed on the level of information for the visitor as well as their pedagogical routes. The resulting research is published digitally through the fascicle format.

  • Publications
Since 2011, it has been part of the program created in the museum’s Research sector, on Training and Training of Human Resources. For this purpose, an inter-institutional agreement was signed with the Non-Rent Training Educational Practices section of the University of Salvador.

  • Presentation at conferences
National, Ibero-American and international with presentations on artists, exhibitions or problems related to Argentine art, produced in the area**

  • Lectures on the collection and artists that integrate it within the framework of temporary exhibitions
The objective is to achieve greater understanding and dissemination of Argentine art. They feature the presence of artists representative of contemporary art whose works make up the institution’s collection. The purpose of these public lectures is also to introduce visitors to the aesthetics of different creators with renowned careers, who expand shared artistic experiences and their common cultural horizon through their stories.

Archive of Argentine and Latin American Art

Originally made up of cataloging cards for heritage works, it currently has 2,846 artists’ envelopes. The tasks of cataloging and organizing the newspaper and catalog material are carried out, which make up each of the envelopes, both with material from the own exhibitions and from other institutions obtained through private donations. Donations of books, catalogs and publications from art galleries and museums are managed.

  • Institutional Memory
The sector also carries out the annual recording of all the museum’s activities published by the written press.
