Requirements to Participate in the Canine Rabies Vaccination Campaign: What You Need to Know

In Peru, for some time now, policies have been reinforced in favor of the care and respect for the life of pets, defenseless beings who are often mistreated and live on the streets exposed to various dangers. For this reason the “VanCan 2023” campaign will be carried out.

This aims to administer the rabies vaccine to 131,170 dogs in the districts that belong to the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Integrated Networks (Diris) Lima Centro.

The campaign has been promoted by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), but will be executed by the Environmental Health Directorate of Diris Lima Centro.

This activity will take place on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15. To this end, 504 vaccination points have been designated for pets, located in strategic areas such as outside some health establishments, plazas, markets, mobile points, among others.

The state entity has reported that the canine vaccination campaign is completely free, since its main objective is to prevent urban rabies and has a focus on accessibility for the population.

To have access to this campaign, the Minsa has indicated that it is necessary to meet the following requirements:

The dog must be older than three months. Be in good health. Not be under observation for having been a biting dog. Have received an external antiparasitic. Not be in a state of pregnancy or heat. Must be transported by a person older than three months. age or someone who can control it to avoid any type of incident. Pet owners must wear the dog’s collar, harness or leash. If the pet is aggressive, the use of a muzzle is mandatory. Companions must carry their national identification document (DNI) or immigration card. Once the vaccination process is completed, the canine vaccination card containing the data must be requested. details of the pet, the date it received the dose, and the staff who administered the vaccine.

Regarding the initiative, the director of Diris Lima Centro, Delia Dávila, explained to Andina Noticias that having a pet is a great responsibility. In addition, she specified that the team involved has a great vocation and understands the need to vaccinate pets against this potentially fatal disease, which can also affect humans. In this sense, she invited people from the community to participate.

It is worth mentioning that the staff has been trained to carry out good vaccination practices for pets and adequately reach all the districts belonging to the Diris Lima Centro, and they also have all the necessary supplies for this purpose.

It is a viral disease that affects domestic or wild mammals, and can be transmitted to humans through infected saliva. A bite or scratch would be enough for this.

It is important to remember that if you suspect this disease in your pet, you should immediately take it to the veterinarian in order to avoid contagion, but also the death of the animal.
