Report says that at least 20 European countries have already peaked, Portugal included – News

According to a report released today by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the “lack of effective treatment or vaccine, combined with exponential growth” of SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes covid-19 disease, has taken almost all countries in the Europe to implement “community and physical distance” measures.

O document published today, with data updated until April 22, highlights that in 20 European countries, the “initial wave of transmission [do novo coronavírus] the peak has passed, with a decline in the number of new reports reported ”.

The cancellation of events with a large concentration of people and the closure of educational establishments and public spaces are some of the examples cited in the report.

The document, which divides Europe into three zones (north, south, west and east), includes Portugal (black line in the first image in the gallery) in the list of 20 countries.

These data are in line with what was reported by the Minister of Health on April 18. Marta Feared, indicated at the daily press conference, that the peak may have been between 23 and 25 March.

The report gathers data from the 27 member states of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – which are part of the European Economic Area (EEA) – and the United Kingdom.

The ECDC explains that the measures implemented by these nations have made it possible to reduce the transmission of the new coronavirus by 18% in the last 14 days (between 8 and 22 April).

“Despite this decline [no número de casos confirmados] have been observed, these measures are highly disruptive to society, both economically and socially. For this reason, there is a significant interest in defining an approach to adjust the measures and reduction of the ‘stay at home’ policies, ”the report continues.

ECDC warns that “lifting measures [de restrição implementadas] too fast, without proper monitoring and the capacity of the health system [de cada país] restored, it may cause a sudden resurgence of community transmission ”.

This conclusion is in line with concerns expressed by the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the lifting of restrictions in each country.
