Hospitals in the US identified a shortage of tests and protective equipment for their staff as the main obstacles they faced to provide adequate care to patients infected with covid-19.

In a survey conducted March 23-27, managers of 323 hospitals in 46 states shared with the Health Department inspector general details about the difficulties they faced during that period to stock up on the necessary amount of protective equipment, tests discard, respirators and other equipment.

They were also struggling to maintain the required number of personnel, to assume the sudden increase in the cost of some supplies, and to conserve or expand the capacity of their physical plant to serve patients with covid-19.

“This is not an evaluation of the response given by the Department of Health to the covid-19 pandemic,” says the report released Monday by the Office of that department.
