Report Reveals Gamers Spend More Time Playing Older Games than New Titles in 2023

Considering how much is written about new games, it can be easy to believe that a majority mostly play at least something like that when new titles. It is not unusual to talk about all the old unplayed games in the library, bought at some sale, while some new game beckons.

In fact, gamers as a whole spend more time on old than new games. A report from Newzoo shows that 61 percent of all hours played in 2023 were spent in games that are at least six years old. Among the popular older games are five titles that together accounted for a quarter of all game hours: Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft and GTA 5. Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft are also the three most played titles on PC overall, and Fortnite is number one also on the three major consoles.

Together, players spent 23 percent of their time on games released in the last three years, and the remaining 16 percent were thus on games that are 4-6 years old.

In the same report, Newzoo shows that the number of hours played in total has dropped by 26 percent since the beginning of 2021, which is hardly surprising considering how many people were forced to stay at home in the first year of Covid-19 (although Sweden was an exception).
