Reopening of Dahab Beach in Egypt after Shark Sighting: No Dangers Confirmed

On Thursday, the authorities in Egypt reopened a beach in the city of Dahab in the South Sinai governorate, which they had closed two days ago due to the appearance of a shark, after making sure that there were no dangers from frequenting it, as confirmed by a local official to Sky News Arabia.

Controversy erupted after a video clip was circulated on social media platforms, showing a shark leaving on one of the city’s beaches overlooking the Red Sea coast, which is a destination for diving and water sports lovers.

The video was widely circulated, and some feared a repeat of what happened in Hurghada last June, when a young Russian was killed by a shark.

A local official told “Sky News Arabia” that the concerned agencies in South Sinai Governorate, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, dealt with the situation, and closed the aforementioned beach as a precaution and preemptively, with the suspension of activities in it since Tuesday until specialists monitor the movement of sharks in the area and ensure that they are far from the beach. .

The official pointed out that “monitoring confirmed that there are no dangers in the beaches of Dahab, and then the beach was reopened on Thursday morning.”

The statements of the researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Egypt, Ashraf Siddiq, to “Sky News Arabia”:

“The appearance of sharks on the beach, whether in Dahab or elsewhere, is normal, because this is the environment in which they live.” “The waters in Dahab are known for their depth, which is a suitable environment for sharks.” “The reasons why sharks come out to the beach are to search for food or to escape from dolphin attacks, whose pointed mouth may cause serious wounds to sharks.” “I advise those who want to swim and dive to do so in areas where dolphins are abundant, because sharks are afraid to be with them in one place.”
