Kochi: Ernakulam district collector Renu Raj has been criticized on social media for announcing a holiday for schools in view of the safety issues at the Brahmapuram waste plant. Netizens have come forward to question the collector’s decision to close schools in Ernakulam city and nearby areas as a precautionary measure following the massive fire at the Brahmapuram waste disposal plant and the spread of toxic fumes. Ernakulam city and nearby areas have been affected by smoke.

Last day, on the official Facebook page of the collector, a holiday was announced for the students up to class 7 of the seven local bodies under the municipal corporation.

Vadavukode – Anganwadis, Kindergarten and Day Care Centers in local bodies of Vadavukod – Puthankurish Gram Panchayat, Kishkanmbalam Gram Panchayat, Kunnathunad Gram Panchayat, Thrikkakara Municipality, Thripunithura Municipality, Maradu Municipality and Kochi Municipal Corporation and for classes 1 to 7 in government, aided and unaided, CBSE and ICSE schools. School holiday was also announced for students on Monday.

Within hours, more than 100 comments came under the post. Almost everyone criticized the collector for not declaring holidays for all students.

‘What about the other kids, aren’t they the same kids, isn’t this affecting them, why aren’t they being given time off? I mean high school, college kids, hopefully we’ll find a solution to this’, ‘No matter how big or small, life is not the same. For parents, children are all the same’, ‘No matter the age, breathing problems are difficult. Children from school to college are preparing for final exams. In this case, if they get sick, they will fail their final exam. Please declare a holiday until the smoke is under control,’ said some of the comments.
