The renowned Brazilian actor Milton Gonçalves died in the city of Rio de Janeiro at the age of 88 due to health problems, his family confirmed.

Gonçalves had been dealing with serious abnormalities since he had a stroke in 2020. He was hospitalized for three months and required breathing apparatus.

Born on December 9, 1933, in the small city of Monte Santo, in Minas Gerais, the actor made more than 40 telenovelas on TV Globo alone, in which he also acted in comedy programs and successful miniseries, such as the first versions of Irmãos Coragem (1970); A Grande Família (1972) and Escrava Isaura (1976).

He fought to get good roles for blacks. He overcame prejudice and fought for the recognition of his acting work for his race, as his son and fellow artist Mauricio Gonçalves recalled.

His portrayal of Pai José in the second version of the soap opera Sinhá Moça (2006) earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the International Emmy Awards.

At the ceremony, he presented the award for best children’s program together with American actress Susan Sarandon. The artist, an apprentice shoemaker, tailor and printer, was the first Brazilian to present the event.

The last telenovela in which he participated on TV Globo was O Tempo Não Para (2018), when he played the recycler Eliseu.
