Renault’s new crossover offers a giant display, MPV variability and hatchback dexterity

Forget about diesel

A diesel engine would be suitable for a relatively large crossover, but today’s units do not want these units. Renault Austral will no longer receive diesel either. At the top of the offer will be the E-Tech hybrid system combining a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, one electric motor and a battery (1.7 kWh). The carmaker will offer two variants, where the weaker one has system parameters of 160 hp and 350 Nm, the stronger one is tuned to 200 hp and 410 Nm.

If you don’t want a hybrid, you can reach for the mild-hybrid four-cylinder thirteen-cylinder available with a manual transmission and 140 horsepower, or with a continuously variable transmission and twenty horsepower higher. Austral will also be producing a three-cylinder petrol twelve, supplemented by a more powerful mild-hybrid system operating at 48 V. Renault is talking about this engine as a replacement for diesel, but it is not aimed at the Czech market yet.

Renault will sell Austral with a lot of interesting technology, including an adaptive cruise control capable of automatic braking before a roundabout, nut adaptive lights or the 4Control system. This is the shooting of the rear wheels, which is definitely not common in this segment. Thanks to this system, the French novelty can offer a smaller turning radius than a city car. Along with Renault Austral, a new sports equipment named the Esprit Alpine was also introduced.
