Remscheiders can also become lifeguards in the Allee-Center on Friday – book an appointment in advance on the Internet.

Remscheid. Where coats and sweaters used to hang there are now life-saving spades. The former Esprit store in the Allee Center was transformed into a pop-up blood donation room on Thursday. Interested parties can also donate blood here on Friday. An appointment should be booked in advance on the Internet so that there are no waiting times. But of course the helpers do not turn down spontaneous donors. On Thursday, according to Jörg Harte, advisor for the DRK blood donation service West, all 56 appointments were booked out. Numerous spontaneous donors also stopped in front of the ex-Esprit store – and decided to take a quick blood sample.

The number of donors has plummeted in times of pandemic. From March to December 2020 alone, the blood donation service West counted 500,000 fewer canned goods, and localities are no longer available. But many, often life-threatening patients, continue to urgently need blood transfusions. The Allee-Center supports the good cause and provides the former fashion shop on the ground floor for two days. “Blood donations are currently more important than ever. Creating a pop-up store at this time seemed very appropriate, ”says Center Manager Nelson Vlijt. “We are happy to be able to make an important contribution, especially since a safe hygiene concept can be easily implemented in the spacious shop area.”

The 200 square meter reception area, six couches and medical stations are set up between empty clothes racks and shop furniture. The doctor conducts the educational discussions next to the unclothed mannequins that are still left. Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the shop is more intimate and pleasant. “Otherwise we were on the action area in front of Thalia,” explains Harte. “The process here in the shop runs smoothly.”

After pre-registering online and registering at the pop-up blood donation center, visitors fill out a questionnaire and have a brief medical examination. Among other things, blood pressure, pulse and body temperature are checked. This is followed by the actual blood donation – it only takes around 10 minutes. 500 milliliters of blood are taken.

It is also good for you.

There is also provision for physical strengthening afterwards: the blood donors receive a voucher from the Evertzberg bakery and a to-go lunch package in paper bags. Christel Gies was one of the 56 registered blood donors yesterday Thursday. She celebrated an anniversary in the pop-up blood donation room: It was her 75th donation. “It is important to do something for others. It is also good for you, the blood renews itself quickly, ”she says. The Lüttringhauser came to the Allee-Center together with a friend. After the donation, they both wanted to quickly redeem their voucher at the Evertzberg bakery.

Due to the corona pandemic, there are restrictions on donating blood in the pop-up center: For example, people who have been outside the EU or the EFTA countries in the past two weeks are excluded from donating. People who have been in contact with people who can be proven to have Covid 19 or who are sick themselves are of course also not allowed to donate blood. A mouth and nose mask must be worn when making a donation. “Anyone who has been vaccinated against the coronavirus can donate blood again the next day,” explains Jörg Harte.

It continues on Friday: The people of Remscheid can donate blood between 4 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. in the Ex-Esprit store in the Allee-Center. An appointment should be booked for this. Please be there five minutes in advance. You can make an appointment here: www.blutspende.jetzt
