Remembering the Legendary Salif Keita: AS Saint-Étienne’s Black Panther

Legend of AS Saint-Étienne during his time at the club between 1962 and 1972, Salif Keita died this Saturday at the age of 76, announced the Malian Football Federation. The first player to receive the African Ballon d’Or, the “Black Panther” won the French Championship three times with the Greens (1968, 1969 and 1970) as well as two French Cups (1968 and 1970).

In five seasons in Forez, Keita scored 140 goals in 185 games. The Malian continued his career at Olympique de Marseille then in the Iberian Peninsula, in Valencia then at Sporting Portugal, before leaving for the United States. He was named Life Ambassador of Saint-Étienne in June 2013.

A tribute will be paid to him this Saturday at Geoffroy-Guichard, before the meeting between ASSE and Valenciennes, as part of the 5th day of Ligue 2, while the Cauldron will also commemorate Georges Bereta, who died in early July.
