The death of Frieder Birzele fills us with deep sadness. We express our heartfelt condolences to his family and relatives and wish him a lot of strength for the coming time.
We are losing a long-time companion, a convinced social democrat, a highly competent politician in many fields, a loyal comrade and good friend. Frieder Birzele has been committed to politics with heart and soul for over six decades, including in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg from 1976 to 2006, where he served as deputy state parliament president from 1996 to 2006. From 1992 to 1996 he was Interior Minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg, for many years he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament and for many years an assessor on the state executive board. His commitment also included many honorary positions outside of politics; Frieder Birzele was honored, among other things, with the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
Frieder Birzele was a social democrat, politician and lawyer with heart and soul. Maintaining law and justice in politics and creating justice through politics was his lifelong goal and motivation for his successful work. As interior minister and as a member of parliament, for his constituency and for the entire country. His advice was sought, his criticism was feared, his friendship was a gift.
We are losing a good friend and controversial companion, a wise advisor whose word was important to us until the end. We salute a great social democrat and his life’s achievements.
We are proud that Frieder was one of our own. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany for over 60 years. We owe him an extraordinary debt and will not forget him.
