The US pharmaceutical company Gilead is looking for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers for its experimental Covid-19 drug Remdesivir. The company is in talks to build a consortium of manufacturing partners to ensure global supply through 2022, Gilead said late Tuesday evening.
The drug requires scarce raw materials and specialized manufacturing capacity for its manufacture. Long-term licenses are said to be negotiated with several generic companies in India and Pakistan to produce remdesivir for developing countries.

One of Bangladesh’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, will begin remdesivir production this month, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a senior executive.
Since almost all countries worldwide are affected by the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, interest in the drug is high. So far, there are no effective therapeutics or vaccines for the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
Gilead received US approval for the use of remdesivir in an emergency last week after the drug company provided data showing that the drug could shorten the course of the disease in patients. The pharmaceutical company had previously announced that it would donate the first 1.5 million doses and make the drug accessible and affordable for so many people once it was approved.
