The breakaway won its showdown. A group of five riders battled for victory in the second stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Monday June 6 at Brives-Charensac (Haute-Loire). Frenchman Alexis Vuillermoz was the strongest in the sprint ahead of Anders Skaarseth and Olivier Le Gac, who launched his effort too far to win.
The TotalEnergies rider took the opportunity to take the leader’s yellow jersey from Wout van Aert, winner of the peloton sprint. The five seconds saved by the small group of fugitives, after 146 km of breakaway, made the difference.
Vuillermoz put an end to three difficult years, punctuated by falls and serious injuries. The Franc-Comtois had not raised his arms to celebrate a victory since the Drôme Classic in March 2019. At 34, he offered his second success in the World Tour, seven years after that in Mûr-de-Bretagne ( Côtes-d’Armor) during the Tour de France 2015.
