At the beginning of summer there is good news for the cultural scene in the region. Due to the sharp drop in incidence, cinema, theater and concerts should be possible again to a significant extent – and not just outdoors.

In view of the significantly lower number of corona infections in Berlin and Brandenburg, the state governments have decided to loosen up cultural businesses in the region. From Friday, June 4th, cinemas, theaters, opera houses, concert halls and other cultural venues in Berlin can reopen to the public, as Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (Linke) said on Tuesday.

Museums, galleries, memorials and libraries in the capital can again receive guests indoors. There is no longer any obligation to test and make appointments. Singing is also possible again outdoors and indoors under strict hygiene requirements.

In Potsdam, the government cabinet also decided to relax far-reaching on Tuesday after the Brandenburg incidence value had fallen to 18.1. Similar to Berlin, theaters, concert halls and cinemas are again allowed to offer outdoor events with up to 500 people in Brandenburg; a maximum of 200 participants are allowed indoors, as Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) explained. A negative corona test is required to attend indoor events. In Brandenburg, the easing will take effect on Thursday (June 3).

Openings and loosenings in many areas

According to the information, up to 100 people with a hygiene concept or up to 500 people with mechanical ventilation and an individual hygiene concept can participate in indoor events. For pilot events, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Deutsche Oper Berlin are allowed to exceed 500 people under the appropriate hygiene conditions.

In Potsdam, the government cabinet also decided to relax far-reaching on Tuesday after the Brandenburg incidence value had fallen to 18.1. Similar to Berlin, where the incidence value was last at 33.6 and more than 630,000 citizens have already been vaccinated twice, theaters, concert halls and cinemas are again allowed to offer outdoor events with up to 500 people in Brandenburg, a maximum of 200 participants are allowed indoors, as Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) explained. A negative corona test is required to attend indoor events. In Brandenburg, the easing will take effect on Thursday (June 3).

Because of the sharp drop in the number of corona infections, the Berlin Senate and the government cabinet in Brandenburg have also decided to loosen the corona rules to a large extent in other areas. Apart from the culture, the relief mainly affects contacts inside and outside, retail, gastronomy, schools, as well as the areas of tourism and sport. In Berlin, parts of a phased plan agreed in mid-May will be brought forward as part of the openings.

Heads of government urge caution

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) emphasized that vaccination protects many people. “But the incidences make it clear: we have not yet defeated the pandemic.”

The Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) also urged caution on Tuesday. “Every step we take in easing the situation means a risk. The pandemic is not over yet,” said Woidke after the cabinet meeting in Potsdam. “We expect the number of infections to remain at least stable, I hope that they will continue to decline. But every loosening, every opening always means an additional risk of infection.”
