Parents draw positive conclusions after a week of alternating lessons

After more than two months, school for the youngest started again at the beginning of the week. First to third graders now have alternating lessons – parents and children in particular are happy about that. However, many are still waiting for vaccinations. By Kirsten Buchmann

The students are happy to be back. Stephan Witzke, Rector of the Lisa Tetzner Elementary School and board member of the GEW School Directors’ Association, perceives her as joyful, inquisitive and enthusiastic: “You are greeted with a smile and you are simply happy yourself that this is possible again, to a certain extent. ”

He also heard from the teachers, educators and social workers at his school that the start was very important for the children. Because they could learn better in class than at home with several siblings at the same table. Teachers and educators help them in class. Some only have to get used to getting up early for school.

Very few of them stay at home

The attendance requirement for students in Berlin has been lifted. Nevertheless, hardly any families at Witzke’s school decide to leave their first to third graders completely at home. It is about students with whom it is understandable, “where there are also basic illnesses in the family, where there is a worry, a fear. But that is negligible.”

No wonder, says the chairman of the State Parents’ Committee, Norman Heise. After all, many families are happy that their children go back to school in small groups, at least temporarily: “The parents who send their children back to school report positively that they may have an hour or two more at home to devote yourself to the tasks in the home office. ” However, some have a bad feeling because there are hardly any additional infection protection measures in schools. There is still no way to vaccinate children.

Vaccinations for teachers at the former Tegel Airport

Education Senator Sandra Scheeres promises vaccinations to teachers. Preparations for this are underway: “It will work the same way as in other areas, so that the staff will receive a code and can then use this code to make an appointment at a vaccination center.”

At the moment it looks like the vaccinations will take place in one place, the former Tegel Airport. Support center employees – as well as daycare workers, child minders and child minders – should be the first to be vaccinated there from the education sector. The Senator of Education argues that they cannot keep a distance from the children and sometimes they cannot wear masks. The next group were those in primary schools.

Waiting for rapid tests

According to the school principal Stephan Witzke, the fact that the vaccinations should come is received consistently positively in his staff because there is security. The teachers and educators want to be tested.

Witzke also hopes for a further improvement: “I would like the rapid tests that we have to transition into the self-tests very quickly.” Because the school doesn’t really want to be able to test both colleagues and children. Witzke is still waiting for something else at his school – air purification devices.

Because the windows can now be opened in most classes, which was not yet possible at the beginning of the corona pandemic. However, he does need the air purification devices in some of his rooms, which are difficult to ventilate. They are expected to arrive in the next four weeks, says Witzke, “the school office is there”. A technical aid to protect teachers and children from infections. So far, nobody at his school has had to be quarantined this week.
